Alexander at Washington
National Cathedral

The first part of Alexander's concert in May 1997 began with Bach's double pedal chorale prelude An Wasserflüssen Babylon, and concluded with Listz' Fantasia and Fugue on BACH.  The second part was dedicated to the USA première of Mirzoyev's Organ Symphony in Homage to Bach, with the composer present.

During his visit Alexander gave a broadcast interview on the Voice of America about his visit and work, and the Azeri composer Mirzoyev's composition.

Washington National Cathedral's large organ is renowned for its very great beauty of sound and variety of departments.  It is one of the few organs in the world to have a 64ft pitch reed, which is of fine quality to the very bottom.
The console is unusual in having the great convenience of the bench, pedal board, and toe piston fascia each on independent hydraulic locating systems, thus allowing each organist to adjust his position to suit him exactly.
